Fused borophenes: A new family of superhard light-weight materials

نویسندگان

چکیده

The search of new superhard materials has received a strong impulse by industrial demands for low-cost alternatives to diamond and $c$-BN, such as metal borides. In this Letter we introduce family materials, ``fused borophenes'' (FBs), containing 2D boron layers that are interlinked form 3D network. These identified through high-throughput scan ${\mathrm{B}}_{x}{\mathrm{C}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$ structures, exhibit Vicker's hardness comparable those the best commercial Due their low formation enthalpies, FBs could be synthesized high-temperature methods, starting from appropriate precursors, or quenching high-pressure phases.

New Superhard Ternary Borides in Composite Materials

Superhard substances are those a hardness above 20 GPa, i.e. higher than that of corundum (Kislii et al.,1988) or with a Vickers hardness Hv exceeding 40 GPa (Sologenko&Gregorianz, 2005). The ten utmost non-metal substances and refractory compounds form a "hardness pyramid" (Kislii et al.,1988) diamond being on top, followed by cubic-boron nitride and boron carbide. Metal-like ones form a simil...

Dynamic consolidation of superhard materials

Shock consolidation experiments were conducted via flyer impact on synthetic diamond (6-12 ^m) and cubic boron nitride (c-BN) (4-8 /im) admixed with SiC whisker (SCW), Si3N4 whisker (SNW), SiC powder, and Si powder contained in stainless steel capsules under the shock pressure range of 10-30 GPa. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy imaging of the samples revealed n...

The search for novel , superhard materials

The recent development in the field of superhard materials with Vickers hardness of >40 GPa is reviewed. Two basic approaches are outlined including the intrinsic superhard materials, such as diamond, cubic boron nitride, C3N4, carbonitrides, etc. and extrinsic, nanostructured materials for which superhardness is achieved by an appropriate design of their microstructure. The theoretically predi...
